DOMINANT START SETS UP BOX HILL VICTORY

Author: Ferg Hickey

An emphatic first quarter has seen the Box Hill Hawks take down the Casey Demons 87 to 46 at Casey Fields.

The 36 points scored in the first term played a crucial role in setting up the Hawks for the rest of the afternoon, as the Demons were just never really able to worry the Hawks.

Lloyd Meek’s 2024 season could not have gotten off to a better start, with the ruck dominating his role the whole afternoon, finishing the game with 26 hit outs as well as two goals.

Ethan Phillips first game for the Hawks was also a highlight, with the key defender taking 15 marks to hold the Demons forward line at bay.

Sam Butler led all scorers with three goals for the afternoon while Harry Morrison and Callum Brown combined for 55 touches.

The Box Hill Hawks 2024 season started off with a great story, as James Parsons in his first game back since the 2022 elimination final snapped home a wonderful goal.

Box Hill was able to put their foot down in the next 10 minutes, as a quick goal out the back from Sam Butler and a very classy finish from Jed Rule saw the hawks put the first three on the board.

Ruckman Lloyd Meek capped off his dominant first term with a goal, while Butler was able to put home his second with an emphatic set shot from 50 out. Casey was able to get their first goal of the season through Paddy Cross, pegging a bit of the margin back.

A sad not to close the first term saw news get out that James Parsons had injured his Achillies, a shocking blow for someone who had just gotten back. The Hawks entered the first break with a 27-point lead.

A far more congested second term saw the Hawks and Demons locked in a tight arm wrestle, with the Demons getting the game more onto their terms with it being played in the contest.

Daniel Wood kicked the only goal for the Hawks in the second term, getting his first one for the brown and gold.

Josh Schache and Caleb Lewis kicked the only other two goals of the term for the Demons which saw the Hawks walk into the main break 22-point leaders.

The second half scoring opened quickly out of the middle as Max Ramsden was able to convert on his promising first half and score his first goal of the afternoon.

A strong patch from the Demons saw Blake Laurie kick a lovely running banana, but an instant response from a centre clearance saw Max Hall extend the lead.

Lloyd Meek continued his ariel dominance as he kicked his second for the afternoon, and delivering a dagger blow to the Demons at the three-quarter time break was Andreas Stefanakis who kicked his first ever goal for Box Hill. The Demons enter the fourth down by 43 points.

Clay tucker was able to kick the first of the final term, after kicking a simple set shot from the top of the goal square after being receiving a silver service pass from Meek.

With the result already in the balance the fourth quarter slowed down compared to others in terms of scoring, but Sam Butler was able to secure his third for the afternoon and put the game to bed.

A dominant 41-point victory sees Box Hill go in with some form as they travel down to Geelong next week to face the Cats on Saturday.

Box Hill Hawks 12.15 87 def Casey Demons 6.10 46.
