For me, music was always around. My mum owned an import record store in the 70s and I grew up studying the liner notes and getting to know every strum and cymbal crash intimately. I have spent a lifetime frequenting record stores, seeing bands and playing in them too.
My other great passion is reading books, watching movies and discussing them with the important people in my life: my wife and daughters, my friends and students.
I find people and their stories endlessly fascinating. I want to understand why people do the things they do and I’m in awe of the great artists who are able to find words or images or sounds that make the hairs on the backs of our necks stand up, the tears well in our eyes and the bile in our bellies rise in anger.
More than anything, I don’t feel quite so alone when I get to spend time with a great album or book or movie. I realise someone else understands exactly.
